Eon R. Smith

Mr. Smith is an experienced advocate who brings over 20 years of civil and criminal trial experience to the firm. Mr. Smith has successful tried criminal and personal injury cases to verdict. He is an attorney admitted to practice in the U.S. and the Caribbean. He is a former U.S. Justice Advisor/Technical Director for the U.S. Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Rule of Law Program in Afghanistan; former prosecutor in the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office; National Trial Competition Champion; winner of multiple Best Advocate awards and he was voted most likely to succeed in law. He serves as a mentor and motivational speaker for young people in New York City and Hartford Connecticut community. Mr. Smith has handled matters in Federal and State courts throughout New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, Guyana, and Trinidad. He is an experienced trial attorney who’s committed to each of his clients. 

 

Mr. Smith received his undergraduate and law degrees from St. John’s University in New York. While in law school, he excelled in several clinical and trial advocacy programs and was selected to serve as a Research Assistant for his criminal law professor, Michael A. Simons, a former Assistant United States Attorney, former Dean of St. John’s University School of Law and current Chair of the New York State Commission on Prosecutorial Conduct.  In this prestigious position, Mr. Smith was acknowledged for his research assistance and writing skills relating to a law review article entitled, Retribution for Rats: Cooperation, Punishment and Atonement, Vanderbilt Law Review, Vol. 56, 2003.   This article examined the cooperation by defendants in the Federal System in the face of the multifaceted and complex Federal Sentencing Guidelines.  Additionally, Mr. Smith was one of three students selected by the Association of the Bar of the City of New York as a St. John’s University School of Law Fellow.

In his second year of law school Mr. Smith was offered a position with the New York County (Manhattan) District Attorney’s Office. Upon graduation, Mr. Smith accepted this offer, and held the position of Assistant District Attorney (ADA) in one of the office’s Trial Bureaus.  During his tenure at the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Smith was fortunate enough to try cases both as lead counsel and under the tutelage of seasoned Assistant District Attorneys.

After leaving the District Attorney’s Office, Mr. Smith joined the law firm of Belluck & Fox, LLP Trial Counsel where his experience as a prosecutor allowed him to play a critical role in a variety of civil litigation cases including asbestos, personal injury, civil rights, employment discrimination and inadequate security. In 2006 Mr. Smith left Belluck & Fox to start his own practice.

Mr. Smith recently served over two years in Afghanistan on a U.S. Department of State Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Rule of Law program. During his time overseas Mr. Smith received multiple promotions leaving Afghanistan in the position of Technical Director, the third highest position in the Justice Sector Support Program, the largest Rule of Law Program of its kind in the world.
